Manaslu Circuit Trek Packing List: What to Bring for a Restricted Area Trek

By Mtdelights ON 16 04, 2026 Manaslu Circuit Trek Packing List: What to Bring for a Restricted Area Trek

The Manaslu Circuit Trek packing list should cover five essential categories: documents and permits, clothing layers, footwear and gear, first aid and medicines, and personal items. The trek crosses Larkya La Pass at 5,160 metres and passes through 14 to 19 days of remote teahouse terrain with no resupply options above Samagaun. Your base pack weight should sit between 10 and 13 kilograms before your porter takes the duffel on this trek. Everything on the list in this blog has been chosen to ease your trek to Manasalu’s restricted area where the nearest pharmacy or gear shop is a full day's walk behind you.

For travelers like you planning to go to Manaslu, you are about to attempt one of the most remote and rewarding trekking routes in Nepal. The Manaslu Circuit Trek circles the world's eighth highest mountain, Manaslu at 8,163 metres, through the Manaslu Conservation Area and the Larkya La Pass lying at 5,160 metres. Since it is a restricted area trek Nepal, you must travel with a licensed guide and carry valid permits. The region has no gear shops above Dharapani as teahouses along the Budhi Gandaki valley carry very limited supplies. What you pack in Kathmandu or Thamel is what you carry for the full duration of the trek on Manaslu routes.

Hence, getting this packing list right matters more on the Manaslu Circuit than it does on the Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp routes. Those trails have teahouses with gear available for hire and villages with small shops every few hours, but  the Manaslu Circuit Trek does not. Especially, the section from Samagaun to Samdo and onward to Dharmasala pass crossing trailhead is genuinely remote. Additionally, the conditions on Larkya La Pass are tough because it sits at a very high elevation with low oxygen levels. Thus, packing light but complete is the standard you need to aim for.

Documents and Permits You Need for Manaslu Circuit Trek

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a restricted area trek Nepal, which means your permits will be checked at multiple police checkpoints along the route. Missing a single document means you cannot continue past the checkpoint. Thus, sort all paperwork in Kathmandu before your drive to the trailhead.

Clothing: The Layering System for Manaslu Trek Conditions

The Manaslu Circuit Trek takes you from subtropical forest at 900 metres near Machha Khola to alpine glacier terrain above 5,000 metres near Larkya La Pass. The temperatures change dramatically within a single day here. Hence, a layering system trekking approach is necessary. It means a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm insulating mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell, is the only practical way to manage the swings of temperature in these trails.

Base Layer and Mid Layer

•       Moisture-wicking thermal tops and leggings (2 sets), for daily wear and cold nights at Samagaun and Samdo.

•       2 long-sleeve polypropylene shirts and 1 short-sleeve hiking shirt for daytime movement.

•       Soft fleece jacket for evenings at teahouses and rest days at acclimatization stops.

•       Down jacket trekking rated to minus 15 degrees Celsius minimum is essential above 4,000 metres and for the Larkya La Pass pre-dawn trek.

•       2 to 3 pairs of quick-dry hiking pants and 1 pair of hiking shorts for lower-elevation trekking days is quintessential.

Outer Shell and Extremities

•       A waterproof and windproof jacket is your primary defence against the wind above Larkya La Pass altitude and unforeseen rain on the lower sections.

•       Waterproof trousers or rain pants are a must for wet descent days on the Budhi Gandaki gorge trail when you cross small streams.

•       Brimmed sun hat for lower elevation exposure and warm beanie or balaclava for high camps to tackle the cold Himalayan winds.

•       Fleece inner gloves plus waterproof outer gloves and both pairs needed to cross the Larkya La Pass.

•       Neck gaiter or buff for wind protection on exposed ridge sections above 4,500 metres.

•       UV-protection sunglasses with wraparound coverage to tackle the glacier glare above 4,000 metres.

Footwear for the Manaslu Circuit Trek

Your feet carry you through 14 to 19 days of mixed terrain it means getting wrong footwear is the fastest way to turn a dream trek into a painful ordeal. We suggest you do not rent hiking boots in Thamel for a trek of this length. Worn-in boots that you have already tested on long walks are the only responsible choice for Larkya La Pass.

•       Waterproof ankle-support trekking boots with a stiff sole and tested before departure and fully broken in or used previously.

•       Micro spike boot which is compact and lightweight for the icy descent from Larkya La Pass.

•       10 to 12 pairs of moisture-wicking hiking socks along with  2 pairs of thermal socks for high-altitude camps.

•       Camp sandals or lightweight slippers for teahouse evenings and river crossing sections.

•       Gaiters for monsoon season travel and any snow above Dharmasala to keep boots dry and mud-free.

Table: Essential Trekking Gear and Equipment

Water bottle (1L minimum)

Carry two if possible. Refill and treat at teahouses with purification tablets

Water purification tablets

Iodine or chlorine tablets as backup to boiling. Critical in remote sections

Dry bags or zip-lock bags

Keep electronics, documents, and spare clothes dry through river gorge sections

Portable power bank

Charging is available at teahouses for NPR 200 to NPR 500 per device but unreliable above Samagaun

First Aid and Medicines for a Remote Restricted Area Trek in Manaslu

The Manaslu Conservation Area has no hospital between Dharapani and the Tibetan border. The nearest helicopter landing zone in an emergency is typically Samagaun at 3,530 metres. Thus, your first aid kit needs to cover everything from minor blisters to early altitude sickness symptoms during the acclimatization process on rest days at Samagaun and Samdo.

•       Diamox altitude sickness medication at 125mg to 250mg.

•      Paracetamol and ibuprofen for headache and inflammation management at altitude.

•       Oral rehydration salts and electrolyte tablets for high-output days above 4,000 metres.

•       Water purification tablets as backup to boiled teahouse water in remote camps.

•       Blister repair kit, moleskin, and antiseptic wipes for foot care throughout the trek.

•       Bandages, compression wrap, and an instant cold pack for ankle support on rocky descent sections.

•       Antidiarrheal medication and antihistamine for stomach issues that affect approximately 30 percent of trekkers on remote trails.

•       SPF 50 sunscreen Nepal for high-altitude UV exposure which is recommended to be applied every two hours in elevation above 3,500 metres.

•       Lip balm with SPF to prevent chapping at Larkya La Pass where altitude is severe on the exposed skin.
