As per the regulations by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), most flights to Lukla, especially during the busy spring and autumn trekking seasons, are diverted to operate from Ramechhap Airport (Manthali) instead of Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport. This is to reduce the air traffic congestion in Kathmandu and ensure the safety and efficiency of all flights.
Ramechhap Airport is used only for flights to Lukla, which means there are more flights and short flight times (about 20 minutes) and fewer delays from air traffic, making the journey easier for trekkers.
Ramechhap Airport is located approximately 4 to 5 hours’ drive from Kathmandu, and we will arrange comfortable ground transportation for our guests to ensure a smooth transfer to the airport.
If a direct flight from Kathmandu to Lukla becomes possible, we will do our best to arrange it for you, depending on the availability and feasibility.
Please be aware that all flights to Lukla are subject to weather conditions, and delays are common due to the mountain region’s unpredictable climate. In the case that your scheduled flight is delayed for more than one day, we can help organize a helicopter flight to Lukla if the weather permits and clients are willing to cover the additional cost.
Accommodation on the Gokyo Valley Trek ranges from basic teahouses to more comfortable lodges along the way. Teahouses are the most common and provide simple rooms with twin beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. Most also offer hot meals, snacks, and drinks, creating a cozy resting place after a long day of trekking.
In popular villages like Namche Bazaar and Dole, upgraded lodges with private rooms, attached bathrooms, and even Wi-Fi may be available. While not as luxurious as city hotels, they offer more comfort than standard teahouses, especially at lower elevations.
Camping is less common on the Gokyo route, but can be arranged for those seeking a more remote or personal experience. Designated camping areas are used to help protect the fragile mountain environment. Trekkers can bring their own gear or rent it through local operators.
Regardless of where you stay, it is important to be ready for cold temperatures and wind, especially at higher altitudes near the Gokyo Lakes and Gokyo Ri. Bring warm clothing, a cold-rated sleeping bag, and essentials like a headlamp, water bottle, and basic first aid.
Comfort levels may be different, but the warm hospitality of the Sherpa hosts and the stunning scenery more than make up for the simplicity of the accommodations.
