About Mountain Delights · since 2004

From porter to pioneer.

A family story from the trails of Nepal: from a trekking porter's first load to a family-run trekking company, since 2004.

Read our story

Our story

Mountain Delights is a family business. Ram Sapkota started it in 2004, after eleven years of carrying loads, cooking and guiding on Nepal's trails. His wife, Nirmala, began her own journey in trekking here before founding Women Adventures. Their son, Himal, now looks after sales and projects, and Parbat Sapkota runs IT and social media.

This is how a village boy from Dhading came to plan your trip.

— The Sapkota family

The family behind Mountain Delights

  1. Chapter 1 · Jyamrung, Dhading

A village boy who wanted to study

A village boy who wanted to study

Ram was born in Jyamrung, a remote village in the hills of Dhading, into a farming family with little money. He wanted an education more than anything, so he left to earn it: first on a road-building project three hours' walk from home, then in Pokhara, where he and a friend took any work they could find – portering, loading and unloading – to save a little more.

  2. Chapter 2 · Kathmandu & the high trails

    From porter to lead guide

    From porter to lead guide

In Kathmandu he carried loads for trekking groups while studying political science, history and culture on his own. The mountains rewarded hard work: he was promoted from porter to kitchen boy, to sherpa, to assistant guide and finally to lead guide, thanks to his strength on tough trails, the English he kept improving and his habit of putting travellers first.

He earned his government trekking guide licence and trained in mountain climbing, rescue and first aid.

  3. Chapter 3 · 2004 · Thamel, Kathmandu

    Mountain Delights begins

    Mountain Delights begins

After eleven years in the mountains, Ram started his own company in 2004: Mountain Delights Treks & Expedition, licensed by the Government of Nepal. From the start it was meant to give young people the opening he had to fight for, and it still hires guides from the regions they lead and buys food and supplies locally.

Many of the travellers from those first years came back, and many became friends of the family.

  4. Chapter 4 · 2005 · Tukee Nepal Society

    Giving back to the village

    Giving back to the village

As a guide, Ram had already used his savings to keep children from his area in school. In 2005 he founded the Tukee Nepal Society. Swedish travellers he guided – Mikael Person, Ewa and Dan Söderberg – visited his village, saw children studying outdoors next to a crumbling school, and set up a support organisation in Sweden.

Today the society sponsors the education of more than 200 children every year and runs health camps, school and sanitation building, electrification, and women's empowerment and farming projects. Part of what Mountain Delights earns goes into this work, and our medical and community treks take travellers there.

  5. Chapter 5 · Nirmala Dhamala (Sapkota)

    Finding her own path

Nirmala Dhamala (Sapkota)Nirmala Dhamala (Sapkota)Founder, Women Adventures · mother

Nirmala began her journey in the trekking industry working at Mountain Delights, the company her husband founded. What she learned here led her to found her own company, Women Adventures.

Mountain Delights still offers female guides and porters on request.

  6. Chapter 6 · Himal Sapkota

    The next generation

Himal SapkotaHimal SapkotaSales & Project Manager · son

Their son Himal now works in the family company as Sales and Project Manager. He looks after sales and the projects the team is running, so that the way Mountain Delights was built – personal, careful and close to the communities it works with – carries on.

Parbat Sapkota, also part of the family, looks after IT and social media: the website, the online advertising and the photos and stories you see from the trail.

“I was always the kind of person who wanted to give something positive to the community.”
Ram Sapkota “Kamal”, founder

How we work

The way we travel matters.

Eco-Conscious & Sustainable Travel Practices

The core of our philosophy lies in sustainable tourism to Nepal as we are deeply concerned about the environment, that is why the principles of leaving no trace are important to us as they help us minimize impact:

  • All non-biodegradable waste is packed out and not left behind
  • Waste is burned and recycling is promoted in a responsible manner, without public exposure
  • Campsite toilets are built 50m away from water sources
  • Minimizing the use of plastic and non-eco-friendly products
  • Only kerosene and gas are used for cooking purposes

We educate our guides in eco-conscious trekking by involving them directly in sustainability efforts.

Responsible Trekking for a Better Nepal

Through our nonprofit arm, Tukee Nepal Society, we do more than organize treks; we help build resilient communities. Through our nonprofit organization, we redirect some of our profits into rural development and empowerment projects:

  • Support for Disadvantaged Children
  • Health camps and medical care in remote villages
  • Infrastructure (toilets, electrification, micro-finance, house renovation)
  • Skills and Women Empowerment Programs

Employment & Welfare of Porters

We are proficient in international guidelines on ethical trekking and fair porter treatment in Nepal, so our porters and staff:

  • Earn equitable wages and periodic bonuses
  • Are insured and receive medical care
  • Are provided with uniform clothing for the seasons
  • Carry recommended loads (not exceeding 25-30 kg)
  • Are never sent back alone when sick or hurt; we prioritize their safety

We also ensure local employment and community support by hiring guides from the local regions and purchasing local food and supplies.

Travel with Innovative Purpose

We are visionary. Our innovative projects are diverse: community-based treks, medical treks that provide free healthcare to villages, and clean-up treks where preservation volunteers maintain Nepalese trails. These opportunities enable travelers to contribute to the maintenance of remote, untouched areas while gaining an unforgettable experience.
