Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve Overview

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve lies in the eastern Tarai close to Itahari attracts a large number of migratory birds. Established in 1976 to protect the grassland and islands in the floodplains of Sapta Koshi River, it is also the last habitat of the Arna (wild water buffalo). Bird watchers arrive here in search of the beautiful Bengal Florican and the flamboyant Sarus cranes. More than 440 species of birds have been recorded here including those that arrive from Siberia and Tibet around November to February. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve is also home to wild boar, jackals, pythons and crocodiles. The endangered Gangetic dolphins are seen occasionally when they surface in the river. A park fee is charged for entering the reserve.

Getting there:

The easiest means of getting there is by air to Biratnagar and by road from the airport to Koshi Tappu. The reserve in not far from the Mahendra Highway and there are buses from Itahari going in.

After breakfast, embark on a guided sightseeing tour of Kathmandu Valley, exploring Nepal's rich cultural, historical, and spiritual heritage. Visit the sacred Pashupatinath Temple, one of the holiest Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, followed by the magnificent Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest Buddhist stupas in the world. Continue to Swayambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), perched on a hilltop offering panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley. Finally, explore the historic Kathmandu Durbar Square, home to ancient palaces, temples, and traditional Newari architecture that reflect Nepal's royal history.

After the tour, return to your hotel. The evening is free for leisure, last-minute shopping, or preparing for your upcoming trek. Overnight stay at the hotel in Kathmandu.

After breakfast, transfer to the domestic terminal of Tribhuvan International Airport for your scheduled flight to Biratnagar. Upon arrival, meet our representative and begin a scenic drive to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, Nepal's first Ramsar-listed wetland and a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Amazing!

Exceptional support and a pleasure to work with

I cannot recommend Mountain Delights Tracks and Expeditions highly enough. Fantastic adventure and Well organized

Me and my husband had a fantastic trekking tour to Everest Base Camp (EBC) from Lukla and back with mountain delight trek. The guide Tilak was very helpfull and kind and full of positive energy and we enjoyed his trekking all the way. Also the porter was very helpfull and kind. We experienced the shepard culture and the shepards are so polite and they have a great hospitality. The Nature is so besutifull and the mountains are amazing. We Saw EBC on a sunny day and I could imagine the trekking to the summit of Everest.
It was an adventure I Will remember for the rest of my life. I will recommand this firm to do the trekkings in himalaya as you can trust this experienced firm 100 pct.

We used Mountain Delight Treks to trek Everest Base Camp

We used Mountain Delight Treks to arrange a 14 day tour to Mount Everest Base Camp and around. Mountain Delight Treks is a very professional company and they know their business to the smallest detail. As part of their business they lend out important gear as sleeping bags, very warm down jackets and more to make the trek as comfortable as possible. And it is all quality gear.
Furthermore, the company’s owner, Ram, is overseeing everything and following all treks on a daily basis. It is clear that Ram and Mountain Delight Treks are doing their outmost to give their clients the best possible experience.
It is also important to mention our guide Tilak. He really did his outmost to make the trek as great an experience as possible. He was up early, worked late and was constantly explaining what we saw and passed on our way. It was also his initiative to change the route back due to a heavy snowfall. We could not continue along the planed route. Instead he arranged visits to several small villages “off route”. This was in itself a very interesting part of the journey. We met so many kind local people and got some very unique experience.

Trekking in Langtang Valley

Would highly recommend Mountain Delights. We had an amazing time trekking in the Langtang Valley. Our guide, Dipak Nepal, did a fantastic job and made everything run smoothly throughout the trek. We didn’t have to worry about anything. Our two porters were also incredible. We would love to go trekking with Mountain Delights again in the future!

Poon Hill and ABC trek

I can really recommend Mountain Delights. We did a 9-day trek to Poon Hill and ABC and the whole experience was great.

Right from the start, Ram was super helpful in the office, giving us clear info and a lot of time to help figure out what trek suited us best. Our guide, Geli Sherpa, was a great guy, very professional but also shared so much about his culture and even joined in on our card games in the evening. Our porter, Peam Sherpa, did an amazing job and we were so glad to have him with us.

The best part was Geli’s expertise. He noticed the weather was shifting and suggested we reach base camp a day early. That easy change gave us "crazy good" weather and an amazing sunrise and sunset. Even when our flight to Pokhara was 3 hours late due to weather, they handled everything so smoothly that we never felt stressed.

The whole trip felt very personal and safe. I’m already looking forward to my next adventure with them!
