If you are looking for a quieter Himalayan experience away from Nepal’s busier trekking routes, both Khopra Danda and Mohare Danda are worth considering. Both treks offer stunning views of the Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Machapuchare, Nilgiri, and Hiunchuli ranges, but each brings you closer to the mountains in a different way.
Khopra Danda Trek takes you higher, where you walk through open mountain landscapes and enjoy wide views of the Himalayas. It takes you to 3,660 metres, with an optional hike to the sacred Khayer Lake at 4,660 metres. During the Mohare Danda Trek, you explore traditional villages and experience the local way of life while also seeing the mountain range, but comparatively from a lower range. It reaches around 3,300 metres and places a stronger focus on community-based tourism and village life. Both treks take you through forests, traditional villages, and peaceful mountain trails in the Annapurna region.
So, which one should you choose? In this blog, we will explore the key differences between the Khopra and Mohare treks, including the scenery, trails, altitude, villages, and overall trekking experience, to help you understand which journey may suit you better.

Khopra Danda
About the trail
You will walk for around 5-7 hours a day, on most days. You will spend much of the day walking through forests, small mountain villages, stone paths, and open hillsides. As you climb higher, the houses become fewer, the trail becomes quieter, and you start to feel more surrounded by the mountains. The higher you go, the more open the landscape becomes, with wide views of the Himalayan peaks.
Different Experiences in Different Seasons
The experience changes with the season. In spring, the rhododendron forests are full of red, pink, and sometimes white flowers. Autumn brings clear skies so you can enjoy sharp views of the surrounding peaks. Winter is colder and quieter, and you may find snow on the higher parts of the trail. During the monsoon, the hills become lush and green, although rain can make some sections wet and slippery.
Main Highlights along the Way
- Ghandruk - a beautiful Gurung village and common starting point
- Tadapani - a forested mountain stop with great views
- Dobato - a quiet high-altitude stop with mountain scenery
- Chistibung - a peaceful pasture area before the final climb
- Khopra Danda (Khopra Ridge) - the main destination of the trek
- Khayer Lake - an optional high-altitude day hike from Khopra Danda
- Swanta Village - a traditional village often included on the route
Mohare Danda
About the trail
You will walk for around 4-6 hours a day, on most days. You will spend much of the day walking through rhododendron and oak forests, terraced hillsides, stone steps, and small mountain villages. As you walk higher, the trail opens up, the villages become smaller, and you get more open views of the surrounding hills and mountains. The trail is generally less demanding than higher-altitude treks. You will get more time to enjoy the villages, forests, and peaceful mountain scenery.
Different Experiences in Different Seasons
The trail has something different to offer in each season. In spring, the rhododendron forests add bright red and pink colours to the hills. Autumn usually brings clear skies and good mountain visibility, making it a great time for walking and enjoying the views. Winter brings cold mornings and quieter trails, while some higher sections can see snow. During the monsoon, the hills become green and fresh, but you should expect rain and muddy or slippery sections.
Main Highlights Along the Way
- Ghandruk - a traditional Gurung village with stone houses and mountain views
- Deurali - a peaceful hilltop stop surrounded by forests and open landscapes
- Banthanti - a small mountain settlement and a pleasant stop along the trail

Khopra Danda or Mohare Danda: Which Should You Choose?
Choose Khopra Danda for Higher Mountains and More Adventure
Khopra Danda is a good fit if your idea of a trek includes getting higher into the mountains and spending time on a dramatic highland. The trail moves from villages and rhododendron forests towards Dobato, Chistibung, and finally Khopra Ridge at 3,660 metres. From the peak, you can see Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Nilgiri, and Machapuchare rising around you.
You can also make an optional day trip to Khayer Lake at 4,660 metres. It is a high-altitude glacial and sacred pilgrimage site. This involves 7-8 hours of walking over steep, high-altitude terrain. This is a considerably more demanding day. It adds a sense of adventure to the trek and takes you to the highest point of the Khopra itinerary.
Choose Mohare Danda for a Slower, More Cultural Experience
Mohare Danda offers a different kind of Himalayan experience. The route passes through terraced farmland, forests, waterfalls, traditional villages, and community-run lodges and homestays. You don’t only pass through villages, but get opportunities to experience local life and meet the Magar and Gurung communities.
One of the interesting stops is Nangi. It is home to a Magar community, a pioneering mountain village that used wireless internet, community projects, and eco-tourism to improve education and healthcare for its local people. The stop gives you an opportunity to experience more of the community-focused character of the Mohare Danda route. The route eventually reaches 3,300 metres, where you can enjoy views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Machapuchare. With a lower maximum elevation and moderate grade, Mohare Danda can also suit trekkers who want a Himalayan adventure without going as high as Khopra’s optional Khayer Lake route.
